A Touch of Darkness
Written by: Scarlett St. Clair
This book is the very first in the Hades and Persephone retelling. The storyline follows how life would be if the gods were living amongst us in our present day world. Hades is the owner of a club called Nevernight, which is incredibly exclusive and acts as the place where he makes his deals with mortals. Hades is known for being "the worst god" and offering unreasonable deals with mortals so that he can claim their souls in the Underworld. One fateful night, he stumbles upon the Goddess of Spring, Persephone, who happens to be dancing along the edge of danger in her search for adventure. Persephone is an unknown Goddess. Her mother, Demeter, kept her hidden away and kept her status a secret from all other gods and goddesses, as well as the world. When Persephone grows up, she begs her mom to let her go to college and live masquerading as a mortal. However, her cover does not last long after meeting the God of the Underworld at his club and accidentally striking a deal of her own. In an effort to keep her freedom, Persephone tries to maintain distance between herself and the infuriating God of the Underworld, but finds that task to be harder than she thought when faced with their burning attraction every time they are in the same room. The novel captures self growth, character development, love, fate, passion and so much more within its pages, you'll find it hard to put down.
While I did thoroughly enjoy reading this book, it was a little harder because of the fact that it was written in third person. Even though I do sometimes enjoy a book in third person, it is not my favorite tense to read. However, with this book, it was easy to ignore the tense and remain being entranced with the actual story. St. Clair does a fabulous job at capturing the Greek tales of gods and goddesses and incorporating them into the real world that we know today. It's incredible the accuracy she maintains in her retelling of the ancient myth when she adds in pieces of a more modern world. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves Greek mythology and doesn't mind falling in love with the villain!
